Thomas Fanshawe, 2nd Viscount Fanshawe : ウィキペディア英語版 | Thomas Fanshawe, 2nd Viscount Fanshawe
Thomas Fanshawe, 2nd Viscount Fanshawe (1632-1674) was an Irish peer and Member of Parliament. He was born to Thomas Fanshawe, 1st Viscount Fanshawe by his second wife Elizabeth Cockayne, the daughter of Sir William Cockayne, who served as the Lord Mayor of London in 1619. == Biography == Thomas Fanshawe grew up during difficult times. By the time Thomas was ten years old, the English Civil War had begun between Parliament and the King Charles I over whose authority took precedence over the other. As staunch Royalists, the Fanshawe family sent many members of the family, including Fanshawe's father, to fight for the king. While his father was away, his uncle, Sir Simon Fanshawe, married the widow of a wealthy landowner and neighbor Knighton Ferrers, Katherine Walter. As a result, he also gained custody of the dead gentleman's daughter, Katherine (d. 1660), as well. To solidify a union between the two families, Sir Simon arranged for Katherine to marry Thomas in 1648 when he was 16 and she 14. When he came of age, he inherited Ware Park in exchange for his first wife's inheritance. This he would later sell to pay off the family's debts incurred by the war. This purportedly would lead to his wife, Katherine, becoming the infamous highway woman that used the alias the 'Wicked Lady' in her exploits. He would go on to serve in the Second English Civil War as an officer of great distinction. For his service to the new king, Charles II, he was created a Knight of the Bath upon the Restoration and became an active member of the new Cavalier Parliament for Hertford.
